Why three forces?
Light is honest: mirrors and prisms obey angles you can sketch with a ruler. Gravity is a cheat with rules: a well catches your beam and slingshots it wherever its arrow points. Time is the rudest tool of all: step into rift A and you have already left rift B. The best solutions use the cheapest force that works — that is what the stars are counting.
